Outcomes of Total Hip Replacement Using Northern California Claims Data: A Pilot Study

Claims data for Medicare patients in Northern California are used to examine the effect on patient mortality of the volume of hip replacement surgeries provided by hospitals and surgeons. Results from the analysis of claims data for 1,324 hip replacement surgeries include an inverse relationship between major complications from total hip replacement and surgical volume. They also found the association of surgeons' volume with post operative death is stronger than that of hospital volume. This study also explores the use of Medicare claims data for research.
