Field Test Evaluation of Rearview Mirror Systems for Commercial Vehicles

The study was a two-year field evaluation of two experimental rear-view mirror systems. The vans accumulated a total of 91,633,662 miles within a region of seven states. The results indicated a statistically significant 17.6 percent reduction in accident rate in the single convex mirror group as compared to the control group. The dual plane/convex mirror group, however, yielded essentially the same accident rate as the control group. It is concluded that accident rate reduction and cost-benefit analyses strongly support the installation of the single convex mirror system on vans at manufacture.
