Nursing Home Admissions: The Results of an Incentive Reimbursement Experiment - Health Care for the Aging

A major demonstration research project has been designed by the National Center for Health Services Research to test the efficacy of an 'incentive reimbursement system' for Medicaid nursing home services. The objectives of the demonstration are: to encourage nursing homes to admit highly dependent Medicaid residents who might otherwise remain inappropriately hospitalized, thus incurring unnecessarily high costs for care; to improve residents' outcomes through improved quality care facilitated by resident-specific goal setting and care planning; to encourage appropriate discharges through case management services provided by the home, thus freeing beds for more severely dependent patients.
