Economic Applications of Assembly Robots. Report No. 6. Economics of Printed Circuit Board Assembly

A typical assembly process for printed circuit boards is described. Then, an initial cost model is described with application to a sample printed circuit board to show the high proportion of manual insertion cost relative to the total insertion cost. Next, standard times from industry for manual assembly of printed circuit boards are presented and compared to times from the Design for Assembly Handbook. Factors that make the Handbook not applicable to printed circuit board assembly are outlined. Lastly, manual and robotic insertion time and cost for non-standard components on a sample printed circuit board are compared to show the economic feasibility of assembly robots for non-standard component insertion.
