Archeological Investigations of Drainage and Construction Features at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Baltimore, Maryland

Archeological investigations focused on two aspects of the fort's construction: drainage features and drainage problems. Excavations along the old fort's parapets uncovered earlier parapet soils, and comparison with historic profile drawings suggest significant soil erosion has occurred. In addition, interpretation of the parapet construction history provides several factors contributing to drainage-related problems on the scarp wall and revetment.
