Involvement of NGOs (Nongovernmental Organizations) in the Development of the Agricultural Machinery Industry in Africa

According to FAO sources, the population of Africa which was estimated in 1980 to be 370 million will attain the figure of 688 million in the year 2000. The same sources pointed out that the Continent will need 49 million more tons of cereals. To attain at least part of its food self-sufficiency target, the Continent needs to develop, among other inputs, the promotion of a national agricultural mecanization. This will need an optimum selection of types of machines and equipment judiciously interrelated with the human factor. African manufacturers of agricultural machines and equipment have been complaining that the major constraints which hamper their activities have been a mainly unorganized demand which is basically satisfied through importation.
