Guardrail and Median Barrier Terminals for Mini-Size Cars. Volume 1. Research Report

The project included the design and full-scale crash test evaluation and development of guardrail terminal designs. Both new and retrofit (upgrading) concepts were evaluated. In addition, currently specified terminal designs such as a 1-ft (0.3-m) flare guardrail BCT and the median barrier breakaway cable terminal (MBCT) were evaluated. A recommended modified BCT terminal called the 'eccentric loader' was demonstrated to meet the criteria for terminals as specified in NCHRP Report 230. A novel straight terminal design called the 'shredder' was partially developed, and recommendations for further development are given in the report. The report (Volume I) contains a summary of the project findings, and the conclusions and recommendations. Detailed reports of the crash tests conducted in the project are in Volume II.
