Evaluation of Fiberglass Scuppers for Highway Bridges

Scuppers are openings that allow water to drain from a bridge deck surface. Recently, fiberglass has replaced cast iron as the material of choice for making scuppers. The Maryland Department of Transportation felt it was necessary to evaluate the problems associated with the initial placement of fiberglass scuppers. The objective of the study was to evaluate construction techniques, identify installation problems and suggest remedies associated with the placement of fiberglass scuppers.
