Diurnal and Spatial Variability of Lightning Activity in Central Florida during the Summer

Lightning location data from central Florida for the summer months of 1983 are presented, to ascertain the diurnal development of space distributions of flash frequencies. The influence of the underlying topography and the resulting diurnal circulations on the time and place of lightning strokes are found to be substantial. In addition, the data show that lightning is relatively rare, and exhibits a very large day-to-day variability. This study also emphasizes the utility of the type of data employed, to study the characteristics not only of lightning as such but also of topographically induced convection in general.
