The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) was established in 1967 to assist developing countries in their efforts towards industrialization. Wood is a virtually universal material which is familiar to people world-wide, whether grown in their country or not. Wood is used for a great variety of purposes but principally for construction, furniture, packaging and other specialized uses such as transmission poles, railway sleepers, matches and household woodenware. The lectures comprising this set of documents are part of UNIDO's continuing efforts to help engineers and specifiers appreciate the role that wood can play as a structural material.
