Archaeological Research on the Leister Barn Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania

Archaeological investigations at the Leister Barn in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, were conducted in May 1985 by MAAR Associates, Inc. on behalf of the National Park Service. Excavations at the Leister Barn were required to document the archaeological record prior to planned construction activities, to gain a better understanding of the history of the structure, and to act as a guide to its preservation and/or restoration. Investigations were undertaken primarily to determine the integrity of the foundation as it presently exists and to find the original 1863 grade around the Leister Barn. While the excavations and research suggested an intact 1863 period foundation, the grade was difficult to define due to extensive subsurface disturbance to the area.
