The objectives of the phase 1 research were to: (1) reveal the relationship between lattice dislocations and inclusions in single crystal cultured quartz; (2) assess the effect on inclusions and dislocations of purifying the input materials to the culturing process; (3) assess the product quality impact of mechanical and chemical treatment of the culturing vessel internals; and (4) evaluate the characterization methods selected to assess the inclusions and dislocations in the research. Purifying the inputs to the culturing process improved the defect densities in the crystal by as much as 59 percent. Treatment of the culturing vessel internals did not yield statistically significant results in the study. The characterization methods used in the study were adequate to assess the impact of major process changes.
