NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) Bibliometric Database and Analysis

The report covers phase 1 of a study to design, evaluate, and test a bibliometric analysis of the research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The bibliometric data base is used to determine where NIMH-supported research papers are published; how often the reports are cited by other scientists and to what fields the research is contributing. The phase of the study determined which databases should be used in the bibliometric database on which the research will be based. The chosen databases include the 1980 subset of NIMH's National Clearinghouse for Mental Health Information (NCMHI) database and the Computer Horizons, Inc., 1980 subset of the BID-MEDLARS database. The report (1) provides the rationale for selecting these databases; (2) describes the procedures used to extract the data from these databases and incorporate the data into a single database by matching all information for each 1980 mental health paper; and (3) describes some tabular data extracted from the bibliometric database. The report also describes plans for phase II of the project, which includes adding 1983 and 1984 citations to the bibliometric database of NIMH-supported papers published in 1980.
