摘要

The following account is the history of a small place during one generation or so, as measured in human time. As such it provides a case study of the way in which a place acquires a history of its own, so as perhaps to illuminate the relationship between geography and history, between space and time. Alley Spring and its environs have interesting natural history--geology, geomorphology, paleo-botany, etc. The historical interest pursued here is cultural rather than natural, however, all the while acknowledging the omnipresent, often overwhelming, significance of nature for this particular place.
