摘要

The Phase I SBIR study on small diameter vascular grafts addressed blood compatibility of a polyurethane elastomer coated onto woven 4 mm Dacron grafts implanted in the carotid and femoral arteries of dogs. Grafts of uncoated 4 mm Dacron and 4 mm Gortex (expanded tetrafluoroethylene) were implanted as control materials to compare with the coated grafts. For each animal, 2 coated Dacron grafts, Gortex graft, and 1 uncoated Dacron, were implanted. The grafts were tested in vivo for patency using palpation and Doppler flow measurements. The animals were sacrificed after 2 months elapsed implantation time. The polyurethane coated Dacron implants resulted in no patencies out of the 12 implants. Both the uncoated Dacron and Gortex grafts exhibited a pseudoneointima where no pseudoneointima was seen on the polyurethane coated Dacron. The polyurethane coated Dacron grafts were plugged due to thrombus build-up at the anastomosis.
