The report explores ways that scientific and engineering societies could independently and cooperatively advance the development of Sub-Saharan Africa. The report makes the following recommendations: Scientific and engineering societies should be strengthened and, in those areas where they do not exist and where a demonstrated need exists, initiated; Effective programs of cooperation and exchange are needed between scientific and engineering societies and their counterparts in developing and industrialized countries; Communications are critical to an effective scientific and technical infrastructure; Scientific and engineering societies can play a strong role in education and training of scientists and engineers; Popularization of science and technology is an important complementary activity to the education and training of scientists and engineers; Scientific and engineering societies should work to establish linkages between industry, universities, and government.
