New or reassigned Bureau of Reclamation employees will find this a valuable reference in performing their duties (laboratory technicians, geologists, inspectors, and engineers). At the end of each section in this manual, there are questions to help you evaluate your understanding of the text. There are three training manuals in the series 'Unified Soil Classification System'. A soil can be classified for engineering purposes using either laboratory tests or by visual examination. A visual classification of a soil includes not only a group symbol and name, but a complete world description. This description is necessary since the person utilizing the information generally does not have laboratory test data available.
