Procedures Manual for the Recommended ARB (Air Resources Board) Particle Size Distribution Method (Cascade Impactors)

The report provides a tutorial on the use of cascade impactors to measure the particle-size distribution of particulate matter at stationary industrial sources, and is Attachment No. 1 to the Project Final Report. The Project Final Report describes the evaluation process used to select the instrumentation described herein. The report describes basic principles of cascade impactor performance and discusses the non-ideal behavior and interferences associated with the instruments. It also provides a detailed field protocol for the use of cascade impactors as stationary industrial sources and describes the details of data analysis and quality assurance/quality control. Commercially available hardware is described and documentation is given for a microcomputer program used to perform all the calculations associated with instrument setup, operation, data reduction and analysis, and to provide graphical presentation of the size distribution information. All programs have been written for the Apple II series of personal computers.
