Survey of State Sampling Methods to Identify New Regional or National Data Bases on Reservoir Fishery Resources

The authors conducted a survey to assess frequency of use and degree of standardization of reservoir sampling methods among 46 state fishery agencies. The objective was to identify routine methods yielding data sufficiently comparable to justify incorporating them into regional or national data bases. Sampling methods were ranked according to the number of states whose use could be categorized as (a) routine, or as (b) routine, occasional, or experimental. Results (a, b, in that order) follow: gill netting (38, 45), electrofishing (35, 45), creel survey (24, 43), trap netting (12, 32), seining (10, 20), rotenone (10, 19), and trawling (0, 17).
