The paper examines some deep-rooted changes which have taken place during the past 20 years in the world's steel industry and presents projections of future steel production and demand. Based on the expected trends in world steel the paper analyzes the prospects for iron ore. It provides an in-depth evaluation of the world seaborne iron ore market potential to 1995; examines the comparative cost structure and competitiveness of existing major producing areas in different regional markets; and determines if future international iron ore market conditions will justify investment considerations for new iron ore production facilities. It addresses future trends in international iron ore trade and examines three separate scenarios -- base case, low case and high case.
