Sample Displacement Actuator for an Automatic Tree Ring Analyzer

Displacement equipment of bore samples has been designed and built for the needs of automated tree ring measurement. A bored tree sample is too long to fit under the imaging device in one take and thus sample movement is needed. The displacement controller takes its commands from the host through a serial interface. As the controller was designed, special attention was paid to the selection of the electrical actuator and how to use it in an optimum way. A stepping motor actuator that has open loop control for its speed and position was found to be an economic solution.
