Metadata for the Representation of Graphical Information in Computer Systems

The program tackled the general problem of archiving technical data existing in plotted graphic form in printed journals, handbooks, technical reports, and other literature. A template methodology was used to characterize all the elements of explicit and implicit metadata. An encyclopedia of more than 160 graphs was compiled to illustrate these elements. Software programs based on a proprietary customizable program concept were developed to guide the procedure for a user to capture the relevant metadata and curve or point data. The technical feasibility of the template format was successfully demonstrated. The results show that the original printed graph can be fully captured in machine readable format and be completely reproduced, either to the original size or to a different user controllable size.
