Comparison of the Organizational Structures and Effectiveness of the Investor-Owned and Voluntary Multihospital Sectors

The study examines the internal structure of multihospital systems, determining the management principles used and the performance levels achieved in medical care and administrative areas. Hospital administrators, in a stratified random sample of 212 hospitals representing thirty-six multihospital corporations, were questioned via a mail questionnaire. A 90.1 percent response rate was achieved, representing responses from 86 of 97 for-profit and 105 of 115 voluntary hospitals. Cross-sectional comparisons were conducted, using frequency distributions, summary statistics, and other descriptive statistical techniques. Generally no differences were found in organizational and operational characteristics of non-profit and for-profit hospitals among the systems surveyed.
