EEC (European Economic Community) Directive on Environmental Impact Assessment: Proceedings of a Seminar

The Council of the European Communities published a Directive on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment in June 1985. It was notified to the member states on July 3 of 1985 and by July 1988 all member states must 'take the necessary measures to comply with the directive'. The seminar - the proceedings of which are contained in the present publication - was envisaged as a first step in Ireland's preparation for compliance with the directive. In broad terms the speakers argued that compliance with the directive could streamline the plaining process and assure properly structured participation by a better informed public. Careful specification and timing a relation to environmental impact studies would ensure that compliance with the directive would not entail an additional layer of control.
