Laboratory Simulation and Optimization of Water Treatment Processes: Demonstration Projects

A case history is presented for a four-year pilot plant study prior to design and construction of the full scale water treatment plant additions of Haworth Filtration Plant in New Jersey, USA. The results of the pilot plant study show that chemical coagulation, ozonation, flotation/skimming, and sand filtration can be used successfully to treat the Oradell Reservoir water. The new treatment process will produce a finished water with less dissolved solids and improved taste and odor. There will be a substantial reduction in the usage of alum, chlorine, and caustic soda. In addition, the amount of sludge produced in process will be substantially reduced and the characteristics of sludge is such that it will be less costly to dispose of.
