Fixed Message Rural Voluntary Diversion Signing

A new concept in traffic control signing, requiring motorists to turnout and stop to read special message signing, was evaluated. Trucks, recreational vehicles, and vehicles pulling trailers are required to turnout and stop to read these special message signs. Motorist compliance to the requirement was high and indicated that the type of traffic control signing technique can be used effectively when it is necessary to provide motorists with lengthy or complex information. Also contained in the study are driver responses associated with the 10-mile section of 10% grade on U.S. 14A. Driver behavior on the grade has been examined and driver understanding of the concept of percent grade was, in general, found to be poor. The type of motorist information signing is the major focus of a state-wide review of all steep downgrades utilizing truck runaway ramps.
