Two different aspects of the behavior of soil as a two-phase medium are studied--the consolidation of soil and scaling relations for soils in centrifuge testing. A consistent approach is presented that unifies all current theories of consolidation of soil and the assumptions upon which these theories are based are examined. For one-dimensional finite strain consolidation, a Lagrangian finite element scheme is given and tested against three different experiments and found to give consistent results. A method that can be incorporated in a numerical scheme to account for the convection in an Eulerian formulation is introduced and demonstrated by incorporating it in a finite difference scheme to solve the one-dimensional consolidation of a finite layer. The method is then used in a finite element scheme to solve the consolidation of a layer accelerated by the use of vertical drains.
