Research Highlights 1985: International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center's (CIMMYT) activities during 1985 are highlighted. The maize program is summarized by research reports on activities, complete or underway, to improve floury maize; breed for resistance to downy mildew; develop multiple insect resistance; assess yield stability (a growing emphasis); and conserve wild relatives of maize. Wheat research is described by reports of studies on barley yellow dwarf, inoculation techniques and identification of material resistant to pathogens; the evolution of CIMMYT triticale research and efforts to breed triticale through crosses with wheat; and the activities of a new seed health unit, particularly with regard to CIMMYT research on Karnal bunt disease. Case studies of crop management research illustrate the methodology developed to focus research on the needs of farmers. Lastly, highlights of research on wheat marketing and pricing in developing countries and on national wheat pricing policies are presented.
