Evaluation of the Scientific Equipment Rental Program: Phase 1 - Management Audit. Phase 2 - System Analysis and Design

During the past decade the Scientific Equipment Rental Program has evolved from a pool of surplus equipment to an activity with $11.2 million in equipment and a dollar flow in excess of $1.5 million per year. The program runs on a no profit, no loss bases and has as the primary goal to accumulate and rent scientific equipment that has general utility in research work but is not sufficiently used by particular laboratories to warrant permanent possesion. The purpose of the evaluation effort was to provide a comprehensive and objective analysis of the Rental Program. The evaluation determined through questionnaires that present and former customers of the service remain satisfied; that the program has been run with admirable efficiency; and the programs goals and objectives have been fully met. Future needs of the program were discerned; placing primary emphasis on the requirement for a computerized management information system.
