Early Survival and Growth of Planted Douglas-Fir with Red Alder in Four Mixed Regimes

The study measured and compared survival and growth of planted Douglas-fir and associated planted and volunteer red alder at a location on the west side of the Cascade Range in Washington. The alder were wildings from either a nearby area or a distant, coastal site and interplanted into a 3-year-old Douglas-fir plantation. Results showed that silviculturists can safely delay alder control on most average or below-average sites until 6 to 8 years after planting Douglas-fir when alder densities are less than about 1250 per hectare.
