The volume contains papers presented at a seminar on university adjustment to a changing financial environment. The purpose of the seminar was to use existing data tapes, analytical resources, and information from interviews with university experts in order to address three basic questions: What is the nature of recent and emerging changes in the financial environment for institutuions of higher education. What mechanisms have been used in the past or could be used in the future by institutions of higher education to adjust to tighter financial circumstances. What are the implications of adjustments for resources allocated to science and engineering research and education in institutions of higher education. The three questions were addressed for higher education as a whole, for public and private research universities, and for public and private undergraduate institutions providing science and engineering education.
