The volume contains papers presented at a seminar on the economics of university operations and finance. The seven technical papers commissioned to determine what existing research evidence says about various aspects of the research topic (1) analyze the relationships between higher education inputs and outputs; (2) and (3) assess available information about the determinants of costs in institutions of higher education; (4) survey research results relating to the influence of market conditions and pricing strategies on demand for various research and education services provided by institutions of higher education; (5) summarize research findings about the nature of the objectives for institutions of higher education held by different participants and funders; (6) analyze how university decisions about priorities and funding for different activities and disciplines are made, how the decision process responds to shifts in funding, and how conflicts are resolved; and (7) examine current problems and opportunities faced by university administrators.
