Development of CAVIJET (Trade Name) Pavement Cutting Equipment, Phase 2. Laboratory Trials

A Circular CAVIJET Pavement Cutter (CCPC) has been developed and tested on a laboratory pavement. Circular slots from 18 to 48 in. diameter can be cut, with full entrapment of the effluent water. Cutting rates through 8-in. thick pavement (2-in. of asphalt over 6-in. of concrete) were 8 to 9 inches/minute with a pump pressure of 10,000 psi. These cutting rates, and preliminary system cost and operating analyses, corroborate the economic viability of a CCPC system which was suggested by the Phase I field trial. Preliminary water treatment tests indicated that water reuse is feasible in operational systems, either as part of a Multipurpose Construction and Maintenance Vehicle, or an independent CAVIJET system for pavement cutting only.
