Fort Irwin Archaeological Project. Research Report Number 21. Archaeological Testing and Data Recovery at Drinkwater Basin, Fort Irwin, San Bernardino County, California

Archeological testing and evaluation and minimal data recovery were undertaken at six prehistoric archeological sites. Prior inventory of the sites suggested that they consisted mainly of surface lithic deposits. Upon the initiation of subsurface testing significant subsurface deposits were encountered. Periods of prehistoric occupation identified at the sites include: Pinto, Gypsum, Saratoga Springs and Shoshohean. A small number of obsidian hydration source-specific dates are consistent with temporal assignments based upon diagnostic artifacts. The sites appear to be small seasonal occupation loci which were located near the lakeshore when water was present in the playa and the lake-marsh resources would be available.
