Analysis of Field Trials to Test and Evaluate Alternative Strategies for Linking the NSFG (National Survey of Family Growth) to the NHIS (National Health Interview Survey)

The objective of this project was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of integrating the designs of the NCHS population-based surveys by conducting field trials to test alternative strategies for using the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) as the sampling frame for the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG). The design features tested were type of sampling unit, elapsed time between the two surveys, and methods for notifying eligible women of their selection for the NSFG. The alternative strategies were evaluated on the basis of response rates, costs, level of effort, and operational feasibility. A sample of about 900 NHIS households containing 300 black females and 600 nonblack females was selected and randomized among the design options. The design options had little effect on response rates. Use of the telephone to make initial contact with sampled women significantly reduced the level of effort and costs associated with obtaining a completed interview.
