Ecuadorean Shrimp Aquaculture Production

Shrimp farmers expect dramatic increases in production and exports in 1987, partially due to economic reforms instituted by the Ecuadorean Government in August 1986. After 2 years of diminishing production, Ecuadorean shrimp farmers are poised to make large gains in both production and earnings. The production increases will require more postlarvae to stock the ponds. Postlarvae were available in adequate quantities during 1986, and the resulting shrimp exports totaled an estimated 24,500 metric tons (t). Industry sources are estimating 1987 exports at 27,500 t, more than 10 percent above 1986 shipments.
