Report to Congress on the Discharge of Hazardous Wastes to Publicly Owned Treatment Works (The Domestic Sewage Study)

The report was prepared in response to Section 3018(a) of the 1984 amendments to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The Congress asked the Agency to determine the types, size and numbers of generators of hazardous waste that discharge their waste to POTW's, the types and quantities of their water, and significant source not sufficiently regulated to protect human health and the environment. The report evaluated 47 industrial categories and identified 160,000 industrial and commercial facilities that discharge wastewater containing hazardous constituents. One hundred and sixty-five (165) chemicals from the hazardous waste chemical constituents list were selected and evaluated.
