National Conference on Safety for Older Consumers: Proceedings and Recommendations

The goal of the conference was to help reduce the high annual toll of home-related accidents experienced by older consumers. Specific objectives of the conference were to help older consumers live more safely and independently with products in their homes, and to explore ways to apply voluntary standards to help reduce deaths and injuries suffered by older consumers in home-related accidents. Topics covered in the report include: Communicating safety information to older people, Marketing safety and new products for older consumers, Poison prevention packaging and older consumers, Falls, Burns and smoke inhalation, Medical devices, Energy-related hazards and remedies, and Home security and personal emergency response systems. Recommendations made by speakers and other conference participants are listed at the end of each major section of the report.
