Role of Foreign-Trade Zones in Local Economic Development

The report provides a summary description of the history and background, major activities, employment, receipts and shipments, income and expenditures, and local taxes and services of thirteen foreign trade zones and subzones. These case studies include information on economic characteristics of the zone; trade issues involving the products in the zone; purchasing patterns; other local industry attracted by or otherwise benefiting from the zone; public infrastructure constructed in or around the zone; local tax revenues associated with the zone; and how the zone was developed. The case studies are part of a larger effort, the purpose of which is to examine the impact of foreign-trade zones on local economies and to assist local economic development officials in evaluating and developing zones in their own communities.
