Human Resource Practices for Implementing Advanced Manufacturing Technology

The experience of manufacturers that have decided to invest in advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) is examined to identify and recommend the human resource practices for its effective implementation and operation. The report contains the results of site visits to a selection of 16 U.S.-operated plants in North America; details of the human resource and manufacturing practices observed at the sites, and how such practices were tailored to fit the technology used; and the overall findings of the committee presented as a summary of the major aspects of an effective implementation practice. The seven areas of human resource practices identified and examined in the report are: planning; plant culture; plant organization; job design; compensation and appraisal; selection, training, and education; and labor-management relations.
