Geostatistical Analysis of Devonian Shale Stratigraphic, Production, and Completion Data in West Virginia. Annual Report July 1985-June 1986

Statistical analysis of Devonian shale gas production in the first year for wells in Roane, Wirt, and Calhoun Counties showed no significant differences among wells grouped by completion method and the number of stratigraphic units completed. The number of wells may not have been sufficient to detect differences which are at most marginal. Decline curves for 95 wells in Lincoln, Logan, and Mingo Counties replicated the typical shape found by earlier workers, i.e. sharp initial decline and a leveling off to a slow decline. Maps of probability of success reveal areas in Wirt, Roane, and Calhoun Counties with favorable probabilities and low drilling densities; these areas may have high potential for gas production.
