The project was initiated in 1983 to catalogue, conserve, and prepare for curation the artifacts resulting from previous archeological projects in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Archeological investigations in the park have been ongoing for the past 20 years and have generated large quantities of artifacts. Prior to this project, these artifact collections had been stored at the park and elsewhere. The condition of the individual collections varied. Some were still in their original field bags. All had been cataloged using different procedures. The purpose of the project was to organize, recatalog using a consistent system, and prepare them for future use and storage.
