Competitive Assessment of the U.S. Mining Machinery Industry

The study of the mining equipment industry examines the current and future international competitiveness of the industry. The report covers mining extraction equipment for surface and underground mining, and mineral processing equipment. The competitiveness of the mining equipment industry in both domestic and export markets has declined over the past 5 years. Although U.S. producers retain a large share of the world market for mining equipment, they can no longer be considered to occupy a dominant position in the market. Mining equipment manufacturers face a steadily growing export market over the coming decade; one which is shifting toward Latin America, Asia and Africa. U.S. competitiveness in these markets will be determined by the ability of mining machinery manufacturers to offer competitive financing, the exchange value of the dollar, and continued improvements in production processes and equipment technology.
