Deterioration of Residential Areas Caused by Inefficently Designed Roads and Parking Facilities

In the Netherlands, urban planning has included an approach called the 'compact town', in which new dwellings and commercial developments must be built within or adjacent to existing towns or cities. Its aims are pollution reduction and safer transportation. The approach is part of the 'modal split' model in which main roads are designed for increased traffic flow and residential streets are restructured for bicycles, pedestrians, and other community uses. To promote knowledge about such redevelopment, a town planning contest was held. The contest and several of the winning designs are discussed in the report.
