Cost Estimating Model for Baccalaureate Nursing Education Programs

The Division of Nursing has had a long-standing interest in the costs of nursing education. Data on these costs are important to the effective assessment of the nursing education environment and the potential availability of graduates to join the ranks of registered nurses. The development of data on the costs of nursing education within the academic setting, however, is a complex undertaking. Most nursing programs share services and facilities with other components within the college or university in which they are located, and nursing students take courses in both the nursing program and other departments of the institution. The document identifies the components of the costs and presents a model in which these components are incorporated. The model uses available resource data on the costs of colleges and universities, as well as specific data on nursing costs, to arrive at estimates of generic baccalaureate nursing education costs. While the report includes estimates of the costs for academic year 1983-84, its prime value is the structure it presents for determining such costs. Thus, it has continuing, current importance to all who are concerned with the costs of nursing education.
