The research optimized, through bench-scale tests, the process variables for the chelation and electroplating operations of an electromembrane process employing a chelating agent, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), for recovery of lead in contaminated soils. Preliminary evaluations of process applicability for various sites were conducted, scale-up design criteria were investigated, and the economics of the process were estimated. The process is applicable to a wide variety of lead-containing soils and wastes. Desirable process criteria include uniform size distribution, high soluble lead content, low clay and fines content, and good dewatering characteristics. Economic analyses show its cost to be competitive with off-site disposal options.
