The monograph is based upon papers and discussion from a technical review which took place on October 3 and 4, 1985 at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. Topics include: Basic research strategies for imaging neurotransmitter systems; The opiate receptor; Personality structure of heroin addicts; Locus of control and need for control among heroin users; Personality characteristics and self-abusive behavior; Sensation seeking and the endogenous deficit theory of drug abuse; Control vs. lack of control over aversive stimuli; Behavioral contingencies involved in drug-induced neurotransmitter turnover changes; Receptor regulation as a function of experience; and Clinical and behavioral considerations in emission tomography study design.
