In the thesis Chapter I gives a general introduction to photosynthesis and the primary processes in membranes of photosynthetic bacteria and green plants. In chapter II the picosecond absorption spectrophotometer is described that is used for the experiments. Chapter III describes the results of a picosecon absorption study on chromatophores of the purple bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. Chapter IV describes the results of a picosecond absorption study on membrane fragments of green bacteria. Chapter V describes the results of a picosecond absorption study on subchloroplast fragments from spinach.
