Building Ponds with Animal Power in the Ethiopian Highlands: A Manual

The use of draft animals for building ponds could be an effective way to improve water supplies in rural Ethiopia, according to the practical manual on the subject. Discussed are: (1) the use of data supplied by local peasant associations to assess water needs; (2) the use of aerial photography, field visits, and analysis of hydrological data in selecting suitable pond sites; (3) conducting detailed soil surveys and estimating water losses from evaporation or seepage for sites actually chosen; (4) designing the ponds; (5) implementing the pond construction program; (6) physically protecting the completed ponds and maintaining proper water use and quality.
