Appropriate Technology as a Development Strategy for Rural Areas in Developing Countries

The paper discusses the issues of the rural and peri-urban poor as the intended beneficiaries of the application of technology. Part 1 tries to clarify the confusion surrounding the definition of 'appropriate technology'. Part 2 briefly describes a few of the ongoing projects supported by Appropriate Technology International (ATI) to implement this strategy of development. Part 3 examines the lessons learned from some case studies that ATI has commissioned of appropriate technology projects sponsored by other organizations. Finally, the paper summarizes the major findings of a set of studies ATI has commissioned on the effects of government macroeconomic policies on the adoption of appropriate technologies.
